ACCESS STATEMENT

Cuckoo Fun is currently in the Research and Development (R&D) stage, which means we are testing different ways to make the activities accessible. We have tried different strategies for this across the website's imaginary worlds, within the physical and financial restrictions of the pandemic. We are working towards making them all accessible to as many people as possible, but we still have some way to go. Across the website there are both audio and video activities as well as paper-based activities which you can download to print at home, or draw off the page if you don’t have a printer. If you would like to receive physical copies of the paper activities included, please email hello@cloudcuckoolandtheatre.com

Several activities in Imaginarium, Planet Me and Get Moving feature imaginative sensory experiences, while Planet Me: My Words features one performer’s Tourette’s tics in a positive light. The website is designed with neurodiverse children in mind: we’d be interested in your feedback about how they use it. All buttons / images have ALT text for visually impaired users.

PLANET ME

Planet Me was created to be accessible to children at different stages of learning English. All the videos feature both text subtitles and additional supports for understanding: including Makaton signs, BSL signs, gestural performance, and drawings, as well as fabric graphics to help children who can’t read subtitles in English. The audio activity will soon be accompanied by a text file description which children can read themselves, or if needed, parents, carers, and educators can use it to communicate the activity to the child.

We are very interested in your feedback about which of these accessibility tools you find most helpful to children with different language and learning needs.

GET MOVING

Get Moving features a range of movement-based activities designed to encourage children of all abilities to enjoy exercise. The activities on the Play page are aimed at primary-aged children, the Sing page is aimed at early years, and the Dance page at both. They aim to encourage creative movement, asking children to use their bodies in playful ways in an informal context. We know that children who are less suited to taking part in school sports can end up being excluded from physical exercise, so our aim here is to encourage children to engage with movement in different ways.

We are working towards adding captions and audio description where it’s helpful. However, children with visual impairments should be able to engage with most of the activities in the meantime.

DING DONG and THE IMAGINARIUM

We hope to add subtitles and audio description to the videos in Ding Dong and The Imaginarium, but this may take a while as it is currently unfunded work. However, children with visual impairments can still engage with the videos as well as the audio activities, as they feature a rich aural and musical palette.

Audio activities in these worlds are not currently accompanied by a text file description to aid children’s engagement; we are working on how to make them accessible to D/deaf children, and hope to do so in the future.
